Millwrights install, maintain, diagnose and repair equipment such as compressors, pumps, conveyors, gas and steam turbines, monorails and extruders.
Millwrights perform precision work, sometimes with specifications requiring tolerances to a thousandth of an inch, on industrial machines that usually cost millions of dollars at coal, gas, nuclear and alternative-energy power plants. Their skills are also on display in various types of factories such as automotive, aerospace, food processing and pharmaceuticals.
They learn their trade through a registered apprenticeship program that is typically cost-free to the student. To begin an apprenticeship in the trade, you are required to be 18 years of age and must have a high-school diploma or a GED.
